Canon U.S.A. Introduces Two New
ImageRUNNER Networked Office Systems

Company to Launch New Digital Copiers for Small Businesses and Corporate Workgroups

NEW YORK April 23, 2002 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ), today introduced a new line of imageRUNNER Networked Office Systems. The new models include the imageRUNNER 1600 and 2000, both designed to meet the needs, volumes and budgets of small businesses and workgroups within large corporations. The products will be on display at the Canon Digital Solution Forum taking place at New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center.

"These models make an ideal choice for customers seeking to increase their productivity by converting from an analog to a digital environment and for businesses wishing to better utilize their existing network infrastructure," said Tod Pike, senior vice president of marketing for Canon U.S.A.'s Imaging Systems Group. "We are very excited about these new products, as they enhance the low end of our tremendously successful imageRUNNER line up."

Operating at speeds of 16 and 20 pages-per-minute (ppm) respectively, the imageRUNNER 1600 and 2000 offer standard digital copying with 16MB of standard memory (expandable to 48MB) that supports features such as Scan-Once-Print-Many technology and Copy Reservation. Each unit can be seamlessly upgraded to support powerful printing capabilities with support for PCL5e and PCL6 page description languages. Genuine Adobe PostScript 3 will become available during 3rd quarter of 2002.

With the ability to scan and print at true 600 x 600 dpi and 256-level grayscale support, both units deliver 1200 x 600 interpolated dpi resolution for copy and 2400 x 600 interpolated dpi resolution for print, ensuring the most faithful reproduction of continuous-tone and halftone images available and printing clear, crisp text.

The imageRUNNER 1600 and 2000 are intended to serve as the primary output device for small businesses and small workgroups in large corporations that need a copy/printer multifunction device. The print engines of both units can support impressive monthly print volumes of up to 50,000 impressions, although environments averaging between 1,500 - 15,000 monthly impressions are optimum. The imageRUNNER 2000 is designed for slightly larger and busier workgroups where faster speed and additional standard paper supply is required. Operating at 20 cpm/ppm, the imageRUNNER 2000 is most appropriate for situations where multiple connected users need a device that can handle remote printing as well as walk-up copying needs.

The imageRUNNER 1600/2000's modular design allows users to add appropriate hardware, memory expansion, and network connectivity accessories as needed.
