New imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 Models Deliver First In-Class Features

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE:CAJ) introduced today an all new line of mid-range imageRUNNER systems for the digital networked office, the imageRUNNER 2200, 2800, and 3300.

Based on Canon's imagePlatform (IP) technology, the models include several first in-class features that set benchmarks in the areas of document finishing, network scanning, footprint size, and environmental conservation. All the new models will begin shipping on June 1, 2001.

"We are extremely pleased to introduce our all new line of imageRUNNER systems, as they include several features that are firsts for the segments they compete in," said Tod Pike, senior vice president of Marketing, Canon U.S.A. Imaging Systems Group. "These models improve upon a very successful lineup with a proven track record, and will continue imageRUNNER brand leadership across market segments."

Operating at speeds of 22, 28, and 33 pages-per-minute (ppm), respectively, the imageRUNNER 2200, 2800, and 3300 all offer standard digital copying and local scanning capability, with the ability to upgrade and include network printing and scanning, and Super G3 faxing at 33.6 Kbps in a modular, step-by-step fashion. True 600 x 600 dots-per-inch (dpi) and 256-level grayscale resolution can be interpolated at 1200 x 600 dpi in copy mode, and 2400 x 600 dpi in print mode for superior black-and-white output quality.

Productivity enhancing features include standard, automatic duplexing (trayless) that offers two-sided document production at the rated speed of each model, and face down output and scan-once-print-many (SOPM) capability, which reduces first copy output time to as low as 5.8 seconds.

New In-Class Features

Extensive Document Finishing - The imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 are the first models in their respective classes to offer single and multi-position stapling, 2 or 3 hole punch, and saddle-stitch booklet making capability. Multi-position stapling and 2 or 3 hole punch are performed at the fully rated engine speed of each model. These capabilities, typically found on high-speed, central reprographic devices are now available to general office users at their desktops. A low-cost, internal document finisher is also new to Segments 2 and 3, offering 30-sheet single-position stapling and 300 sheet output. The internal finisher dramatically reduces the overall size of each model compared to competitive offerings.

Network Scanning Support - The imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 all offer robust network scanning capability when used in conjunction with the optional Network Multi-PDL Printer Kit-C1, Canon Network ScanGear TWAIN Driver, and eCopy Inc. document distribution software. Each unit can be configured with an integrated eCopy ScanStation touch screen and PC, which allows users to receive an immediate visual preview of all scanned pages prior to sending the document to its destination.

Users can securely scan and route documents to a number of destinations including their desktops, via e-mail, LAN Fax, or directly for printing. Documents such as contracts, invoices, sensitive legal documents, engineering documents, and artwork can easily be delivered with substantial savings in time and money compared to traditional fax, overnight courier, or interoffice mail services.

Smallest Footprint - With a main unit installation space requirement of only 32 5/8" x 26 3/4" (W x D), the imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 models set new benchmarks for compactness in mid-volume multifunction device design, making them an ideal solution in environments with limited space.

Energy Conservation and Environmental Design - Based on Canon's design concept that won the 2000 "Copier of the Future Award of Excellence" from the International Energy Agency (IEA) Demand Side Management program, the imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 models not only meet, but greatly exceed U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR qualification criteria. Canon's patented RAPID Fusing System dramatically reduces the energy consumed during warm-up and sleep modes to less than 25% that of conventional copiers. Also, each unit contains an ozone-free corona charger specifically designed to eliminate ozone emissions. The machines also have a lead-, halogen- and chrome-free design, which eliminates the release of these potentially harmful substances when the equipment is disposed or recycled. The new imageRUNNER units are manufactured at ISO14001 certified facilities, accept 100% recycled paper, and are designed for recovery via uniform grade plastics, conscientious labeling, and easy disassembly.

Every base imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 model comes equipped with a 5.1 GB Internal Image Server and 128 MB of RAM supporting Copy Reservation (up to 5 jobs) and Job Build functions, and a 100 confidential user Mail Box system in copy and print modes. The same memory supports document chapterization, automatic image orientation, and automatic page impositioning for saddle-stitch booklet making.

The imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 models support duty cycles up to 75,000, 100,000, and 120,000 impressions per month, respectively. Standard 1,050-sheet paper supply can be upgraded to 4,550 sheets total (Statement to 11" x 17" size) for uninterrupted operation in  demanding environments. A 50-sheet stack bypass and optional 50-sheet automatic document feeder facilitate document input in handling a wide variety of paper sizes.

The new imageRUNNERs are very strong machines and represent some of the best multifunction technology on the market today," remarked Jon Bees, editor in chief of Better Buys for Business, a leading independent authority on office equipment. "Based on a brand new platform, these new machines are designed for advanced copy, print, fax, and scan use."

With an optional embedded network print controller offering 10/100 Ethernet network connectivity and printing support, every imageRUNNER 2200/2800/3300 performs true multi-tasking through a robust combination of intuitive software drivers and control panel features. Print configured versions offer PCL5e, PCL6, and PostScript 3 emulation printing. Token Ring connectivity is optional. Using Canon's Remote UI Software on the new imageRUNNERs when connected to the network allows users and system administrators to access a device using a standard Web browser to perform a comprehensive list of setup and administrative functions.
